Use Relay with ChatGPT

Connect Relay on chatgpt.com or in the ChatGPT desktop app, and check the connection.

This connection works on ChatGPT Free and paid plans. On Business, Enterprise, and Edu, workspace settings can limit custom connections.

Connect Relay before you ask ChatGPT for SEO research. ChatGPT cannot add the connection by itself. If you paste the setup prompt into a chat, it gives you these steps.

ChatGPT on the web

  1. Sign in to chatgpt.com.

  2. If you see it, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.

  3. Open Plugins, select +, then Create MCP App. In older versions, look for Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode, then Create.

  4. Enter these details:

    FieldValue
    NameRelay
    Server URLhttps://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp
    AuthenticationOAuth

Type the full address, including https://.

  5. Create the connection, sign in to Relay in the window that opens, and approve. If the new app needs installing, open it under Personal and select Install.

  6. Start a new chat, open the + menu, and select Relay.

  7. Send the connection check below.

You do not need an API key for ChatGPT; sign-in handles it. A custom connection gives ChatGPT Relay's tools. It does not install skill files, but you can still ask for audits or keyword research in plain language.

ChatGPT desktop and Codex

To use Relay in Codex inside the desktop app, start a new Codex chat and paste the setup prompt. Or follow the Codex guide. Codex and ChatGPT on the web use separate connections.

Check the connection

Send this in a new chat with Relay selected:

Use Relay to check my connection and list my projects. Do not run SEO research or create anything.

ChatGPT should call Relay and list your projects. An empty list still means it works. These reads are free.

Then try:

Use Relay to help me choose one SEO task for my website. Ask about my goal before starting paid research.
