Connect with MCP

Connect Relay to Claude, Cursor, Codex, ChatGPT, and any other MCP client.

Relay's MCP server gives compatible AI clients the same tools you use in the app: keyword research, live search results, domain and backlink research, rank tracking, saved keywords, Search Console performance, URL inspection, AI visibility, reports, and your shared project context.

The MCP server address is:

https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp

The first connection opens Relay sign-in in your browser. After you approve, your client can call Relay tools for the projects in your workspace. For servers and CI, connect with an API key instead.

Want your agent to do the setup? Use the setup prompt.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user relay https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp

Use --scope user to make Relay available in every project, or leave it out for the current project only. Approve the sign-in when Claude asks. Then add the skills.

Claude desktop and claude.ai

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Select Add (or +), then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Relay and paste https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp.
  4. Approve the Relay sign-in.

Free Claude plans support one custom connector.

Cursor

  1. Open Cursor Settings → Tools & Integrations → MCP Tools.
  2. Select New MCP Server. Cursor opens mcp.json.
  3. Add:
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "relay": {
      "url": "https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}
  1. Approve the Relay sign-in.

Codex

codex mcp add relay --url https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp
codex mcp login relay

In the ChatGPT desktop app, open Codex → Settings → MCP servers → Add server, name it relay, choose Streamable HTTP, and enter the address above. See the Codex guide.

ChatGPT

Follow the ChatGPT guide.

Connect with an API key

Use an API key on servers, in CI, or in clients where browser sign-in is not practical. A key acts as you: anything an agent does with it happens in your workspace.

In Relay, open Settings → API keys, create a key, and copy it. Relay shows it only once.

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user relay https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer relay_YOUR_KEY"

Cursor (mcp.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "relay": {
      "url": "https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer relay_YOUR_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

Codex:

export RELAY_API_KEY=relay_YOUR_KEY
codex mcp add relay --url https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp --bearer-token-env-var RELAY_API_KEY

Any client that sends custom headers can use Authorization: Bearer relay_YOUR_KEY or x-api-key: relay_YOUR_KEY. Keys created before Relay's rename start with oseo_ and keep working.

Check the connection

Ask your agent:

Use Relay to check my connection and list my projects. Do not run SEO research or create anything.

These reads are free. An empty project list still means the connection works.

Troubleshooting

  • Cannot connect: check that the address is exactly https://relay.playbookmedia.io/mcp.
  • Sign-in fails: remove the Relay server from your client, add it again, and sign in again.
  • Codex reports a missing issuer: update Codex to 0.147.0 or later, or connect with an API key.
  • The agent cannot find a project: ask it to list your Relay projects first, then use the returned project ID.

Next: add the SEO skills so your agent knows how to use the data.
